With the instrumentals mainly produced by Sounwave and Pharrell Williams, Lamar’s team behind this track has had both award winning success and both sport large, dedicated fanbases. This track has had huge resonation with the public, landing it as the unofficial anthem at protests by the Black Lives Matter movement and also receiving four nominations at the 58th Grammy Awards: Song of the Year, Best Music Video, Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song (winning the last two).By using these jazz inspired musical influences, like the jazz saxophone and the harmonic vocals, it creates a sonic tapestry that incorporates many elements of African American culture. Lamar is literally making himself the messiah-esque figure for the community and at the same time acting as a voice for the community. “Alright” becomes the height of this, with a music video filled with imagery of police brutality and Lamar himself performing feats akin to miracles.
Lamar returned in 2015 with “To Pimp a Butterfly”, which was a more matured look at his role in the black community and how he would use his platform for this community. Not to get too emotional, I will move on to detail that this album was mainly a inner reflection of not only Lamar’s formative life in Compton, but the difficulties the community faced as a whole. Right in time for my schoolies experience so it was obviously bumped quite a bit and is probably going to be an album I remember for life. Kendrick Lamar first came into my radar in 2012 with his album “ good kid, m.A.A.d city” which was released in October 2012.
